THE WHOLE ARMOR OF GOD
“…be strong in the Lord, and in the power of his might. Put on the whole armor of God, that ye may be able to stand against the wiles of the devil. For we wrestle not against flesh and blood, but against principalities, against powers, against the rulers of the darkness of this world, against spiritual wickedness in high places.” (Ephesians 6:10-12)
To win the battle against the enemy the bride Church has to change out of her pretty dress and put on her spiritual armor. She needs to be dressed for conquest, to have a wonder-working wardrobe! When she put on her armor, she is fully equipped to overcome the enemy!
God has given us everything we need to overcome. We have the armor and weapons that can enable us to win!
Problem: Most Christians doesn’t know what our armor is or how to put it on. We want to learn how to put on our armor.
To teach us about our spiritual armor, Paul uses the illustration of a fully armed roman soldier (Ephesians 6:10-18). He describes six different pieces of armor God has given us!
The first piece of armor is the belt of truth
“Stand therefore, having your loins girt about with truth” (Ephesians 6:14).
The belt was the key to a soldier’s strength. His belt hold everything else in place! (Sword, dagger, breastplate) It was the foundation of all he did! God has given us a belt also. The belt of truth. That’s the first thing we need if we want to stand against the enemy. We need to know God’s truth.
Satan is a liar and father of lies. His primary strategy is to lie! He lies to you about who you are! In deliverance, when we are trying to set someone free from oppression, first thing we must do is find out where they have believed satan’s lie! If you can see the truth of God… it will set you free!
Always satan has a lie for you and the Lord has a truth for you at the same time.
Satan lies to the Church. Satan sees army of God and thinks: “How can I defeat it?”…He says: “Gifts are not for today”…we lay downs our weapons; “women can’t minister”…half army sit down; “Christianity not manly”…other half sits down; “God doesn’t heal today”…we always sick; “God doesn’t speak today”…stop listening, go own way!
We can miss God’s blessings if we don’t know His truth!
How do we put on truth?
Jesus said: God’s Word is truth. We put on truth when we fill our minds with the word of God. Romans 12:2 says “be ye transformed by the renewing of your mind” As we spend time in the word, God is actually re-programming our thinking. If you know the truth, you won’t fall for satan’s lie.
Ask yourself: Am I wearing the belt of truth? Am I transforming my mind with God’s Word?
The next piece of armor is the breastplate of righteousness.
“…and having on the breastplate of righteousness” (Ephesians 6:14)
The breastplate protected the soldier’s vital organs. It even covered his back. As long as breastplate is intact he was protected from the enemy. If breastplate is damaged he was vulnerable
God has given you a breastplate! It’s designed to shield you from enemy’s attacks! If your breastplate is in place, you are safe. Your breastplate is righteousness! Proverbs 13:6 “righteousness guards the man of integrity”; Proverbs 10:2 “righteousness delivers from death”; Proverbs 11:6 “righteousness of the upright delivers them”.
Righteousness is your armor to protect you from the enemy!
Problem: Many Christians have holes in their breastplate. Every time you sin…hole in your armor! Result: the enemy is free to attack.
How do we restore our breastplate and cut off the enemy’s attacks?
David in II Samuel 11
David’s breastplate was destroyed his sin with Bathsheba went from lust to adultery to deception to murder. Satan had a strategy to bring destruction!
Satan’s goal: To destroy David’s life, his family and his kingdom, and ultimately to prevent him from being the forerunner of the Messiah!
God has a solution: Nathan the prophet! He confronted and David repented and destruction was stopped! David’s breastplate was restored!
No matter what you have done. God has a way out if you will repent! If God has shown some of your areas of sin that give satan an opening, get alone with God, confess and repent and claim his promise of forgiveness according 1 John 1:9: “ If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.”
Ask yourself: Is my breastplate in place? Have I confessed and repented of all know sin?
Next we need to put on our combat boots!
“And your feet shod with the preparation of the gospel of peace” Ephesians 6:15
Normally we don’t think of boots as armor but they are essential. No matter how strong you are, or what armor you are wearing. If you don’t have sure footing, you can never move forward!
A soldier’s boot were his foundation for victory. Romans army boots were actually sandals! It sound strange, but very practical lightweight, made of tough leather, strong. They were strapped firmly to his legs to hold his foot securely. They had iron spikes on the sole to keep his foot from slipping. With his boots in place, a roman soldier could move forward with confidence in any situation.
God has given us a foundation for victory also! Ephesians 6 tell us what it is! It’s the gospel of peace! What is the gospel? Good news.
Mark 1:1 Good news of Jesus Christ. The Savior has come to pay our penalty.
Matthew 4:23 Good news of the kingdom. The kingdom of God has invaded satan’s territory to releases captives and destroy devil’s works.
Acts 20:24 Good news of God’s grace. Blessings come by God’s grace, not self-effort.
Ephesians 6:15 Good news of peace.
What is peace?
Peace in the Bible is not “absence of warfare”. In the Bible the idea of peace comes from the Hebrew word “shalom”. Shalom includes total peace, joy and provision, experiencing fulfillment and a long life, experiencing wellbeing in every area. It’s the restoration of all was lost at the fall!
The good news of shalom is the confidence that God will restore all that satan stole! God will fix whatever satan has broken! That means that none of satan’s threats and accusations can have power against you! That is the fullness of the gospel. Jesus didn’t die just to rescue you from hell! He died to bring you shalom. He died to restore all of the inheritance that your grandfather Adam lost! That good news! That gives you firm footing against the enemy! It means you can face satan and all his forces fearlessly!
When satan comes at you with fears and worries and tries to knock your feet out from under you, you can plant your foot on the gospel of peace and stand firm.
Ask yourself: Are my feet fitted with the gospel of peace? Have I thanked God that he will restore what satan has stolen?
The next Paul mention is the shield of faith
“Above all, taking the shield of faith, wherewith ye shall be able to quench all the fiery darts of the wicked.” (Ephesians 6:16)
The roman battle shield. The Greek word for shield: “Thuria”= door shield. It was called the “castle” shield (4 feet tall x 2 feet wide). Too big to be made of metal! Wooden framework, leather (from bull or calf) stretched out and nailed seven layers of built up. It was strong and light! Ultimate defense! Why was this so important?
They had a terrifying enemy! In ancient warfare, to keep de enemy form advancing armies used a terrifying tactic: Unleashing a storm of flaming arrows igniting anything they struck, striking terror in their adversary.
The defense was the shield protected the whole man. Lines up side-by-side the roman troops could move across the battlefield like moving fortress! Soldiers behind the front line put their shields overhead like a “testudo” – made an armored tank! The shield was a key to victory!
God has given you a shield too! It is a shield that can protect you against every attack of the enemy!
To understand our spiritual shield remember how a shield was made:
- Skin of a bull or a calf (natural) = Sacrifice of animals, sacrifice of sins (spiritual)
- 7 layers (natural) 7 = perfect = perfect sacrifice.
- Stretched out and nailed to a wooden framework (natural) God took his perfect sacrifice and nailed him to a cross (spiritual)
- The shield was designed to take all the arrows intended for you (natural) = to take all suffering intended for you!
Jesus is our shield!
Jesus hung on the cross to take on himself every arrow satan could fire at you! At the cross Jesus made a divine exchange
You: Blessings (Galatians 3:13-14) Jesus took our curse
You: Righteousness (II Corinthians 5:21) Jesus took our sin
You: Health (Isaiah 53:4-5) Jesus took our sickness
Abundance (II Corinthians 8:9) Jesus took our Poverty
Jesus died to take upon himself every curse satan wanted to lay upon you!
He came to be your shield! It is his will that the evil which was intended for you come upon him instead. But you must activate your shield by faith!
To take up your shield…
•By faith thank God that Jesus took upon himself all of the evil intended for you!
•By faith declare God’s blessings as your portion! Healing, provision, peace, etc.
•By faith, choose to reject discouragement and fear. Ask God for his strategy to overcome!
•By faith, set your eyes on the goal and move forward!
Ask yourself: Have I taken up my shield of faith?
Thank you Jesus that you took the curse I deserved!
The next piece of armor: The helmet of salvation
“And take the helmet of salvation” (Ephesians 6:17)
Significance of the helmet:
Metal cap, padded on the inside, designed to protect your head (to protect your mind) against the attacks of enemy.
The helmet was important. Wearing the helmet made the difference between life and death, injury and escape. To go into battle without your helmet was to make yourself vulnerable!
God gave you a piece of armor to protect your mind. Your helmet is salvation. You put on your salvation helmet by coming to understand the salvation Jesus purchased for you.
Satan wants to fill you with hopelessness…to think nothing will change… to give you a mindset that settles for poverty, sickness, sin and shame. Steal away your expectations, cut of your future! He wants you to resign yourself to your salvation instead of trusting God’s power to restore!... when satan can do that, he wins! but salvation means that in Jesus there is full restoration!
When satan comes to fill your mind with thoughts of fear and loss…rise up and say: “Satan, God has promised to restore everything”. That’s putting on salvation as a helmet! When you put on salvation your mind is protected! you begin to walk in confidence and hope, faith begins to rise!
You begin to draw close to God and gain his strategy for breakthrough but more than that you begin to plunder the enemy!
The helmet was not just designed for protection. In the ancient world, helmets were usually decorated with crests, horns, wings, to make the warrior seen larger, taller, stronger and fiercer! Weapon of intimidation! Helmet was designed to strike fear in the heart of the enemy! That’s what your helmet of salvation does to satan!
Satan sees some as easy prey. He loves to come and attack you. He comes and speaks depression, hopelessness and weakness! Without the helmet of salvation your mind will believe everything he says!
When you put on salvation those attacks end! When you put on salvation, satan no longer sees you as easy prey. He sees you as his worst nightmare. You are armed to plunder the enemy’s camp.
Ask yourself: Have I put on my helmet of salvation?
Thank God that your salvation strikes fear in the head of the enemy!
Now we come to the final piece of armor: The sword of the Spirit
“…and the sword of the Spirit, which is the word of God” (Ephesians 6:17)
The sword of the Spirit is the word of God. What is your sword? The Bible, a powerful weapon in the spirit. Hebrew 4:12 the word of God… two edged sword.
How do we use sword?
Matthew 4:1-11 we see Jesus used the sword.
Notice: Satan comes to tempt you when the testing is almost over. When you are nearing the point of breakthrough…almost made it! He will appeal to your flesh to try to steal away your prize!
Notice what Jesus did…satan says and Jesus answered: It is written (3 times)…then the devil left him…
The sword of the Spirit has power, but you need to know what the word says! When satan comes to tempt you…you don’t have to let him win… you can take up your sword!
God’s promise: When you resist the devil, he will flee from you!
Ask yourself: Have I taken up my sword? Am I ready to counter satan’s attacks with God’s word?
God has called you to a supernatural life! God did not create you to be a victim! He designed you to be a victor, but you need to put on the whole armor of God!
